Lau Group, Fiji

Trip Days Ports of Call Dates
159 10 SavuSavu, Fiji Oct 5 - Oct 15, 2015
This trip to the Lau Group will only happen if we book all three cabins. It's kind of an end of season "optional". Jody and I sailed there back in 2004 and it remains a very special place in our hearts. Geographically it's actually more a part of the Tongan chain than the Fijian. As you cannot check into these islands legally when inbound to Fiji from Tonga very very few boats visit these islands as it requires a long beat back to windward. But in October the trades have eased off and are often replaced with westerlies, making for a nice passage. When we went in 2004 it was one of the best night sails of my life- 10 knots close hauled in a nothing sea with dolphins playing off our bow under the full moon for most of the night. Exquisite.

The Lau group is impossibly pretty and nearly untouched by modern society. The people there have guarded their isolation and way of live fiercely, opting to live in simplicity in a sustainable way rather than joining the rat race. It's a special and rare area that has much to offer that stand against our western methods. The archipelago also has some phenomenal breaks, or at least rumors of them. It's a large area and we have very little real knowledge of these islands so this will be very much an exploratory trip. No promises!

Permits to the Lau group are compulsory. Obviously we can only go if we are successful in obtaining the required transit paperwork. This is a highly recommended itinerary for those of you who are seeking real adventure. For a big step into the past, and a promise of the unknown in a world where unknown is hard to find- this is the trip!

Getting there: There are a number of ways to get to Fiji. Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand, or United Airlines. International flights arrive into Nadi, on the west coast. Domestic flights up to SavuSavu through Fiji Airways.
