Bay of Islands Gunkholing

Trip Days Ports of Call Dates

The Bay of Islands in New Zealand is one of the most scenic places in the entire country. Countless small islands and bays make for an idyllic and peaceful summer trip at the northern end of the land of the long white cloud. Stunning vistas abound, rock oysters are a dinghy ride and a glass of sauvignon away. Pretty reliable winds make for some fun flatwater off the boat, and land excursions- hikes, visits to the local pubs, bird watching, etc all make cruising around the Bay of Islands relaxing and stress-free. If you're looking for high adventure, this trip is probably a little too cruisy, but if you're looking for some romantic anchorages, good eats, easy sailing and chance to see some of the best gunkholing spots in the world, look no further.

"New Zealand’s South Island usually steals the attention, but the oft-overlooked North Island also features a sublime combination of forests, mountains and beaches. In the latter, the North has a clear lead – particularly in subtropical Northland, the Coromandel Peninsula and the west coast, with its wild surf beaches. Tackle one of the North Island’s Great Walks – one even offers a river journey by canoe or kayak – or spend a few hours wandering through the accessible wilderness of the Coromandel. Day trips from vibrant Auckland can include kayaking to dormant volcanoes or canyoning and abseiling down forested waterfalls." -- Lonely Planet. Read more:

Getting there: International flights to Auckland are offered on several different airlines. We suggest spending a night or two in the city or environs on the front end to deal with the long flight and jet lag. You can then fly up to Keri Keri on Air New Zealand, or probably more interesting- rent a one-way car and do the drive (4 hours at a mellow pace) so you can see some of the coast and sights. There is also a regular bus from downtown Auckland that is close to many of the hotels. Auckland is not a great city compared to the capital (Wellington) for poking around as it's a working city and isn't very vibrant, but there are lovely walks, some fun places to eat, and the viaduct is must if you are an Americas Cup fan.
