Kosrae- Land of the Lost

Trip Days Ports of Call Dates

We begin and end this wild, very special adventure in Kosrae, in the Federated States of Micronesia, truly one of the last outposts of original native island cultures. The 42-square-mile island of Kosrae is located southeast of Guam and southwest of Hawaii. This island is known for its virgin reef and pristine waters, visibility up to 200+ ft. and thriving hard coral society. There are more than 172 species of hard corals and 10 species of soft corals. There are over 250 species of fish and other marine life. This island one of the most devoutly religious in the Pacific, and also one of the most unique. During our long visit in 2009 Kosrae really grew on us. Impenetrable jungle literally falls directly into a blue abyss that sings with promise. There are really no stores, no propane, no goods- but there are plenty of fish, and some of the finest breaks we ever found. The flat water kiting area is quite limited, but there is some terrific wave kiting, and awesome surf. We recommend this trip for folks who are seeking a really unique and remote adventure to a place very, very few people ever go. The pace is laid back, the adventure is pretty full-on!

From Lonely Planet: "The Federated States of Micronesia sits in the heart of the Caroline Islands Archipelago, a vast seascape that extends from Palau in the west to Kiribati in the east. Situated within a rich center of biodiversity at the convergence of the major currents of the Indian Ocean, the Philippine Sea and the great Pacific Ocean, it is home to the world's greatest coral reefs and the best pelagic fisheries remaining in the world today."
